Photowalk: Central Flacq Market

It had been many years since I last visited Central Flacq Market—probably not since my early adolescence. Returning now felt like stepping into a place both familiar and entirely new at the same time.

There was a quiet nostalgia in the air, yet it felt new and refreshing . I was pleasantly surprised by how vast the market actually is. It unfolded in layers—colourful, vibrant, and full of energy. Like most markets in Mauritius, it carried that lively rhythm of daily life, but there was something distinct about this one.

Markets outside the center of the island seem to hold their own kind of magic—a certain spark. The people feel different, the pace shifts, and the experience becomes more grounded.

The hustle and bustle, the rich scent of spices lingering in the air, voices overlapping, movement in every direction—yet somehow, it did not feel overwhelming. There were moments of stillness too. Near the food court area, the space opened up, offering room to breathe, with a view stretching out over green pastures and trees in the distance. A quiet contrast to the liveliness of the market.

As I walked through, I passed rows of food stalls, each carrying its own aroma and character. Rays of light filtered through the structure above, falling gently on fresh local produce.

It was a place of simple beauty—alive with local stories, textures and unexpected interactions.
Later, we headed to Belle Mare Beach for a late lunch and some time to unwind. The rhythm of the market slowly gave way to the calm of the sea—the perfect ending to a day.
